One of the most popular wives' tales cautions pregnant people against eating pineapple during pregnancy. According to WebMD, the idea that pineapple should be avoided during pregnancy most likely comes from the fact that the popular fruit contains an enzyme called bromelain, which can, on occasion, cause feelings of cramping that can be mistaken for preterm labor.

According to Healthline, bromelain is an enzyme that helps to break down protein in your body, and while concentrated bromelain tablets are not recommended during pregnancy, the amount of bromelain found in an average pineapple is considered safe.

In an interview with Verywell Family, Dr. Shaista Waheed explains, "Pineapple causing a miscarriage is a myth [and there is] no scientific evidence to support this." So fear not, if one of your most common pregnancy cravings is pineapple, feel free to indulge in this nutritious and delicious tropical snack.
