These Extreme Rules PPVs usually feature many gimmick matches that generate high expectations and usually deliver. In fact, some of these PPVs have been memorable and worth watching over again. However, there are exceptions as well, as some Extreme Rules events have been disappointing, as WWE put on a poor show. 14 Extreme Rules 2018

The WWE Universe may have forgotten that Dolph Ziggler main evented a PPV, as he and Seth Rollins headlined Extreme Rules 2018. It was a mediocre 30-minute Iron Man match, just like the rest of the PPV.

There were 10 matches, and only three were decent. Alexa Bliss defeated Nia Jax in a poor showing. Shinsuke Nakamura defeated Jeff Hardy in six seconds, Kevin Owens and Braun Strowman delivered a lackluster match and Carmella defeated Asuka in an awful bout. The only thing that was really worth watching was the WWE Title match between AJ Styles and Rusev.

13 Extreme Rules 2015

Extreme Rules 2015 was a very boring pay-per-view. Roman Reigns defeated The Big Show in a Last Man Standing Match, which was the best thing of the night.

The main event was a Steel Cage match between Seth Rollins and Randy Orton, which was disappointing. John Cena and Rusev clashed in a Russian Chain match that turned out to be mediocre and the Chicago Street Fight between Dean Ambrose and Luke Harper was too long and boring.

12 Extreme Rules 2017

This PPV was not as good as expected. The Steel Cage match between The Bar (Cesaro and Sheamus) and The Hardy Boyz looked very promising but ended up being an ordinary match. Alexa Bliss and Bayley had one of the worst matches of their careers and Sasha Banks teamed with Rich Swann to face Alicia Fox and Noam Dar.

At least the main event was an excellent match. Samoa Joe defeated Bray Wyatt, Finn Balor, Roman Reigns, and Seth Rollins to earn a Universal title shot.

11 The Horror Show At Extreme Rules, 2020

The Horror Show at Extreme Rules was a decent PPV, with high and low points. The main event was a cinematic match between Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman, which maybe fans of this kind of matches liked, but overall, it was heavily criticized.

The match between Bayley and Nikki Cross was pretty boring and Seth Rollins defeated Rey Mysterio in an entertaining Eye For An Eye Match. The best matches of the PPV were Asuka versus Sasha Banks and Drew McIntyre against Dolph Ziggler.

10 Extreme Rules 2021

The in-ring action at Extreme Rules 2021 was decent, but the lack of matches with "extreme" stipulations hampered the show. The New Day reunited with Big E just two weeks into his maiden WWE Championship reign. They battled past former WWE Champion Bobby Lashley, AJ Styles, and Omos in the curtain-raiser.

The Usos and the Street Profits produced a fantastic SmackDown Tag Team Championship match. Becky Lynch and Bianca Belair's SmackDown Women's Championship match was a draw with Sasha Banks returning from her hiatus. Damian Priest, Jeff Hardy, and Sheamus' triple threat bout for the United States Championship was outstanding. The main event was the only Extreme Rules match and it pitted the reigning Universal Champion Roman Reigns defending his title against Finn Balor. The ending was bizarre with the top rope breaking, but Reigns continued his historic run as Universal Champion.

9 Extreme Rules 2013

This was a solid PPV, but nothing extraordinary. Most of the matches were okay, but there were no memorable bouts. The main event featured Brock Lesnar facing Triple H in a Steel Cage match, which was brutal and cool but could have been better. Also, the Last Man Standing match between John Cena and Ryback was fun.

It was a successful night for The Shield, as Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins became Tag Team Champions after defeating Team Hell No, and Dean Ambrose won the United States Title after defeating Kofi Kingston.

8 Extreme Rules 2010

John Cena successfully defended the WWE Heavyweight Title against Batista in a brutal Last Man Standing Match. Edge and Chris Jericho collided in a great Steel Cage match and CM Punk and Rey Mysterio put on a perfect show as well.

Sheamus defeated Triple H in an acceptable match and the strap match between JTG and Shad Gaspard was short but not bad at all. This PPV would have been much better if not for the Extreme Rules match between Jack Swagger and Randy Orton, and the Tag Team Gauntlet Match.

7 Extreme Rules 2014

Extreme Rules 2014 was a very good show, with entertaining matches and good booking decisions. The highlight of the night was the Six-Man Tag Team Match between The Shield and Evolution. The Extreme Rules Match for the World Heavyweight Title between Daniel Bryan and Kane was outstanding as well.

The opening match between Cesaro, Rob Van Dam, and Jack Swagger is underrated, it's a great match that no one talks about. Unfortunately, the Steel Cage match between John Cena and Bray Wyatt was underwhelming.

6 Extreme Rules 2022

The most recent edition of Extreme Rules in 2022 was the first under the Triple H regime, and every match on the card had a stipulation that made the event stand out. The curtain-raiser was a six-man tag team Good Old Fashioned Donnybrook match with the Brawling Brutes and Imperium slugging it out in the match of the night.

Ronda Rousey reclaimed the SmackDown Women's Championship from Liv Morgan in an Extreme Rules match. Bianca Belair and Bayley's ladder match for the Raw Women's Championship was the first women's ladder match to take place on the main roster. The main event was mediocre with Matt Riddle battling past Seth "Freakin" Rollins in a Fight Pit match with UFC Hall of Daniel Cormier as the special referee. Afterward, Bray Wyatt made his WWE return, 14 months after he was released from the company in 2021.

The inaugural Extreme Rules PPV didn’t disappoint. It was full of gimmick matches, like a Fatal Four Way, No Holds Barred, Strap, Steel Cage, Ladder, and Extreme Rules, of course.

The No Holds Barred Match between Chris Jericho and Rey Mysterio was fantastic and Edge and Jeff Hardy delivered a mind-blowing Ladder match. It was great to see Hardy becoming World Heavyweight Champion, but CM Punk cashed in his Money In The Bank contract and spoiled Hardy’s moment.

4 Extreme Rules 2019

Overall, Extreme Rules 2019 was great. In the opening match, Roman Reigns and The Undertaker made a dream team and defeated Drew McIntyre and Shane McMahon.

Aleister Black defeated Cesaro in an outstanding match, Bobby Lashley and Braun Strowman put on a great show in their Last Man Standing match, and AJ Styles and Ricochet delivered in a spot fest. Unfortunately, the main event was lackluster, Becky Lynch and Seth Rollins defeated Baron Corbin and Lacey Evans. In the end, Brock Lesnar appeared and cashed in his MITB contract to become Universal Champion.

3 Extreme Rules 2016

Extreme Rules 2016 featured seven matches, only one of which was off-key, the Asylum Match between Dean Ambrose and Chris Jericho, which was underwhelming. Otherwise, the PPV was great.

There are two bouts that stand out, The Fatal Four Way match between The Miz, Cesaro, Kevin Owens, and Sami Zayn, which was a wrestling work of art, and the phenomenal Extreme Rules match between Roman Reigns and AJ Styles.

2 Extreme Rules 2011

This was a solid PPV from start to finish. The fans enjoyed several great matches, such as the Last Man Standing Match between Randy Orton and CM Punk, the Triple Threat Steel Cage Match between John Cena, John Morrison, and The Miz for the WWE Championship, and the Falls Count Anywhere match between Rey Mysterio and Cody Rhodes.

Those matches were certainly excellent, but the highlight of the night was the Ladder Match for the World Heavyweight Title between Christian and Alberto Del Rio.

1 Extreme Rules 2012

Extreme Rules 2012 was one of the best WWE PPVs of the 2010s, hands down. The event was headlined by John Cena and Brock Lesnar, who put on an unforgettable show. Interestingly, Lesnar didn't win in his return, despite destroying Cena throughout the match, but sometimes unpredictability is great.

Sheamus and Daniel Bryan delivered an amazing match and CM Punk and Chris Jericho were great in their match as well. Another match worth mentioning is Randy Orton versus Kane, which was a great battle.
