There’s a reason that so many wrestling fans name The New Day as their favorite tag team of all time. Two of the group’s three members have each held the WWE Championship, and the group as a whole have been Tag Team Champions more than ten times throughout their run.

The group managed to surpass Demolition’s astounding record 478-day reign as WWE Tag Team Champions and have since gone down in history as the longest-reigning male Tag Team Champions in WWE history at 483 days. Over their many years together, the group has changed their gimmick's focus and been both fan favorites and despised heels.

10 Rolling Stone Named All Three Members As Wrestler Of The Year

WWE The New Day Royal Rumble 2021

It’s generally considered an honor when a major publication names someone as the Wrestler of the Year, but fans may have already forgotten that all three members of The New Day were named Wrestler(s) of the Year at the same time by Rolling Stone.

It’s hard to argue that they didn’t deserve the honor. The group managed to change the entire landscape of tag team wrestling in an incredibly short amount of time. One might even say that the state of WWE’s tag team division before The New Day’s rise was abysmal at best.

It seems that the idea mostly came from a sense of frustration that had befallen not only Woods but also Kingston and Big E. They were all floundering during the period in which the group was formed, so it made sense that they all wanted more from their careers.

Many wrestling fans know that The New Day was interested in adding Sasha Banks to their roster, but there were others that fans may not be aware of. Fans may not know that Damien Sandow and Alicia Fox were considered to be added to the group at one point.

While Sasha Banks probably could have made an excellent addition to the group, it’s harder to say if Damien Sandow or Alicia Fox would fit in with the dynamic. Fox could have brought her chaotic energy and Sandow could have made for a funny kind of antithesis to the group, but we’ll never know what could have been.

While it is fair to say that the original idea for The New Day was a bit broad in scope, it’s clear that the trio put in a lot of work to solidify what they could do and who they could be as a group. With how much work they did do, it’s shocking that WWE creative didn’t believe in the idea.

Each of the men from The New Day has stated just how much effort they put into pitching the concept. The group spent hours filming promos, coming up with a variety of ideas and angles, and simply growing their bond, so why WWE creative didn’t believe in them is anyone’s guess.

Thanks to how vocal the trio is, some fans have learned that the group had an idea that would see The New Day in a gimmick similar to The APA. They wanted to be a group that others could go to in order to get their problems solved, albeit in a more comedic fashion.

Even a quick thought to compare The New Day and the APA will have fans of both teams fans brimming with hilarious ideas. According to Kofi Kingston, just about everyone they pitched it to, loved it, everyone except for Vince McMahon.

When The New Day first debuted, they had a hard time finding a serious fanbase. Many wrestling fans had a hard time taking a gospel group seriously, especially during a time when wrestling fans were starting to really expect more from the WWE and their performers.

The group has openly stated how disappointed they were with the gospel gimmick because it felt like one big stereotype. None of them wanted to be singing and dancing. They wanted to do what they could to show the world they were just as good as the top guys.

Every wrestling fan has at least some knowledge of CM Punk’s public and brutal split from WWE. What they may not know is that while CM Punk has said he had sworn off WWE programming, he has said that he would actively watch The New Day’s segments.

The statement isn’t hard to believe when you consider both how good The New Day were at their peak, and Punk’s apparent friendship with Kofi Kingston. Many fans even agree that for a while, The New Day was the reason to watch WWE programming.

1 They Wanted To Break Stereotypes Before Their Gospel Era

New Day Summerslam 2015

It would be an understatement to say that The New Day is a revolutionary group in wrestling history. The trio actually had lofty goals from even before their debut as a group as they wanted to buck the various stereotypes that bogged down not only wrestling but all media.

The group has said that they had hoped to show young Black kids that they could be whoever they wanted to be and that they didn’t have to just be some typical stereotype. Knowing that fact almost makes their immediate debut as a gospel group utterly heartbreaking. Luckily, the group overcame the odds and are now legendary.
